In 2003, the Walker Art Center exhibited artist Julie Mehretu's first major solo show. Julie uses maps and architectural plans to concoct densely-layered abstract paintings that plot the experiences and development of the cultures and people she studies. In order to reveal these reference points, Julie's collected newspaper clippings were printed on the interior side of a perforated french-folded page. The book also utilizes a series of gate folds which keep the large horizontal paintings out of the gutters of the book. Additionally, the details on the opening spreads reproduce a section of each painting to scale. This represented the level of detail inherent in these complex paintings.
